profligate:recklessly extravagant or wasteful in the use of resources
日本語にすると「横暴なくらい常軌を逸した、もしくは無駄な資産の消費」と言った感じでしょうか。

コラムでは次のように使われていました。
"American profligacy and financial greed got us all into the mess."
「アメリカの浪費と金銭欲が、我々すべてを混乱に巻き込んだのだ」

語源は、
mid 16th cent. (in the sense 'overthrown, routed'): from Latin profligatus 'dissolute', past participle of profligare 'overthrow, ruin', from pro- 'forward, down' + fligere 'strike down'.
ラテン語の「放り投げる」からきているようです。

コラムの中の「ドイツの輸出産業の成功は、貨幣操作による物ではない。企業の競争力が増加したからだ。一方で、アメリカの成長モデルは深刻なトラブルのなかにある。アメリカは借金生活を長く送りすぎた。金融界を必要以上にふくらませ、中小企業を無視してきた」という部分が印象的でした。
