ポール・クルーグマン教授が「まともな政府の国債がデフォルトになるなんてありえない、ただし…」といっています。

「基本的に財務が健全である政府が単純な問題でデフォルトになるには、埋めることのできない溝が政党の間にあり、一つの党が極論を持つ人々で大半をしめられ、恨み深く無能で無知な大統領がいなくてはならない」

 

"vindictive"をググると以下のように説明されています。

"having or showing a strong unreasoning desire for revenge"

「復讐にたいして理不尽で強い願望をみせる又は持つ」

語源は、

"early 17th century: from Latin vindicta 'vengence' + -ive"

ラテン語の復讐という言葉から来ているみたいです。
