from Latin subsistere 'stand firm',
from sub- 'from below' + sistere 'set, stand'.
ラテン語で「しっかりと立つ」というところからきているようです。
語源の意味とは違ってsubsistは「（かろうじて最低限の）存在を保つ」、
といったニュアンスが強い単語です。
