日本語にすると「勇敢に危機に立ち向かう、または痛みや困難を耐える、意志の強さ」といった感じでしょうか。

コラムでは次のように使われていました。
"There’s no one in Washington in either party with the fortitude to try to stop them from grabbing anything that’s not nailed down."
「ワシントンには、曖昧な物はすべて手にする人々を止めようとする気概を持った人は、どちらの政党にもいない。」

語源は、
Middle English: via French from Latin fortitudo, from fortis 'strong'.
ラテン語の「強さ」という意味から来ているようです。
