語源は以下のように説明されています。

ラテン語のvānus「空っぽ、中身のない」が語源です。そこからラテン語のvānitās「空虚、判断の欠落、馬鹿げたプライド」になり、外来語としてアングロ・フレンチのvanité、それが中世英語のvaniteとなって今のvaintyにつながっています。
