"break down"をググると以下のように説明されています。

ラテン語の接頭語'negotiat-'「ビジネスの過程で行われる」から来ています。

この接頭語の語源は、動詞のnegotium 'business', neg-'not', + otium'leisure'です。

否定を意味する'neg-'と「レジャー（休暇）」を意味する'optium'がくっついて'negotium'となり、英語の'negotiation'につながっています。
