「お金は使うためにある」を英語で言ってみたい。

YouTuberとしても有名なジョン・グリーンの“Paper Towns.”からの引用です。

 

 

シーワールドに不方侵入した主人公Qと幼馴染のマーゴはガードマンに見つけられます。

“Yessir,” Margo said demurely, and with that the man walked off into the darkness. “Man,” Margo mumbled as the guy walked away, “I really didn’t want to pay that perv. But, oh well. Money’s for spendin’.” I could barely even hear her; the only thing happening was the relief shivering out of my skin. This raw pleasure was worth all the worry that preceded it.”

"Money is for spending" = 「お金は使うためにある」

 

 

 

"spend"をググると以下のように説明されています。

"pay out (money) in buying or hiring goods or service"

「モノやサービスを買ったり雇ったりするのに(お金を)支払う」

語源は、

"Old English spendan, from Lati nexpendere 'pay out'; partly also a shortening of obsolte dispend, from Latin dipsendere 'pay out'"

『支払い』を意味するラテン語"expendere"からきた古期英語"spendan"が語源。
