pullはイギリス英語の学習辞書ロングマンのサイトで以下のように説明されています。

「ちぎる」でググるとよく出てくるのが"tear"ですがロングマンでは以下のように説明されています。

どうも"tear"と"pull"は両方「ちぎり」という意味があるようです。

そこで今流行りのChatGPTに違いを聞いてみました。ChatGPTに「編集者になったつもりで"tear"と”pull”では言葉の響きはどう違うのか説明してください」と頼んでみました。その回答は以下のとおりです。

”pull”には丁寧な"tear"には乱暴なイメージがあるようです。

そこでロングマンのサイトに戻ると"tear"の意味は最初に以下のように説明されています

"to damage something such as paper or cloth by pulling it hard or letting it touch something sharp."

「紙や布などを強く引っ張ったり、鋭い何かで損傷させること」

ということで、"tear"の元々の意味は「引き裂く」という意味のようです。

確かに日本語でも「ちぎる」というと丁寧に取り除くというより「（大雑把に）ちぎる」ニュアンスがあるので"tear"の方が日本人の「レタスのはをちぎる」に近い響きがあります。かといって”pull”が間違いかというと、元々"tear"の意味の一つに"pull off"があるので"pull something off"でも問題ないかと思います。"pull"の方が中間的なニュアンスの響きがするというだけです。

付け加えると似たような単語で"rip"もありますが、この単語は日本語の感覚だと「引き裂く」に近いと思います。ChatGPTに聞いてみたところ以下のような回答が帰ってきました。
