crony: a close friend or companion
日本語にすると「身近な友達、仲間」といった感じでしょうか。

コラムでは次のように使われていました。
Reed started his reforms by enlisting two professionals, not cronies, to help run the city
「リードは、自分の知り合いに市の運営を手伝ってもらうのではなく、二人のプロフェッショナルに協力を仰ぐことにより、改革を始めた」

語源は、
mid 17th cent. (originally Cambridge university slang): from Greek khronios 'long-lasting' (here used to mean 'contemporary'), from khronos 'time'.
ケンブリッジ大学のスラングが由来です。ギリシャ語のkhronios（長く続く）、この場合「同時に存在する」という意味が語源のようです。
