TheJapanTimesの 旅行記からの引用です。
The rain had abated and eventually the ground leveled out as I shakily covered the final few hundred meters to my ultimate destination.「最終目的地までの最後の数百メートルをふらつきながら歩いた頃には雨はもう弱まっていて地面は次第に平坦になってきた 」
"the rain abates" = 「雨が弱まる」
イギリス英語の学習辞書ロングマンではabateは以下のように説明されています。
”(formal) to become less strong or decrease”「弱まるまたは減少する」
e.g., "We waited for the storm to abate." 例「私たちは嵐が弱まるのを待った」
同じくイギリス英語の学習辞書OxfordLearner'sDictionaryのサイトでは以下のように説明されています。

"to become less intense or severe; to make something less intense or severe"「弱まるまたは和らぐ。何かを弱めるまたは和らげる」
アメリカ英語の辞書Merriam-Websterのサイトでは以下のように説明されています。
"to decrease in force or intensity"「強さまたは激しさが減少する」
"abate"と同義語の違いがMerriam-Websterのサイトで説明されています。
"abate", "subside", "wane", "ebb"これらの英単語は「強さ又は激しさが減少する」という意味ですが、以下のように使い分けます。
"abate"は徐々に減少するというニュアンスを強調します。
"subside"は騒乱や動揺が収まることを意味します。。
"wane"は何か良いことまたは素晴らしいものが弱まったり消えていったりすることを暗示します。
"ebb"は何かが収まって元に戻っていくことを暗示します。
これらの英単語の基本的な意味は”decrease（減っていく）”なのですが、単語によってのニュアンスが以上のように違います。

「（走っていると）脇腹が痛い」を英語で？
"have a side stitch" = 「脇腹が痛い」
Wikipediaでは"side stich"が以下のように説明されています。
"A side stitch is an intense stabbing abdominal pain under the lower edge of the ribcage that occurs during exercise. It is also called a side ache, side clamp, muscle stitch, or simply stitch, and the medical term is exercise-related transient abdominal pain (ETAP)."
「side stitchとは運動しているときに脇腹の下に起こる刺すような激しい痛みである。side ache, side clamp, muscle stitch, 又は単純にstitch友呼ばれる。医学用語としてはexercise-related transient abdominal pain（ETAP）という」
Cambridge Dictionaryのサイトで"stitch"は以下のように説明されています。
"a sharp pain in the side of your stomach or chest, often caused by not breathing enough when running or laughing"
e.g., "I got a stitch after running for the bus."
例、「バスを追いかけたあと脇腹が痛くなった」
ぐぐると"stitch"の意味は以下のように説明されています。
