"a canvasser" = 「勧誘員」
"cannvasser"をググると以下のように説明されています。
"a person who tries to persuade people ot vote for or support someone or something"
「誰かや何かを支援もしくは投票するように説得する人」
"canvass"という動詞に"-er"がついて「〜する人」という名詞になっています。
なぜ"canvass"が「勧誘」という意味を持つようになったかというと、以下のように説明されています。
"early 16th century(in the sennse 'toss in a canvass sheet'(as a sport or puinshment)): from canvas. Later extended sennses include 'criticize, discuss' (mid 16th century) and 'propose for discusstion'; hence 'seek support for'"
16世紀初めには「スポーツまたは罰としてキャンバスシートに放り投げる」ことを意味していました。そこから発展して16世紀半ばには「批判する、協議する」という意味を持つようになります。そして「支援を求める」という意味にたどり着きます。

語源をたどると、
"somethign left waste"(残りもの)を意味するラテン語の"desertum"にたどり着きます。
