"rev the engine" = 「エンジンを吹かす」

「クラッチを離しながらアクセルを踏み込んで（エンジンの）速度を上げるまたは車のエンジン回転数をあげること」

２０世紀のはじめに使われ始めた単語で、"revolution"の短縮形です。

「革命」の意味のイメージが強かったのですが、"revolution"の語源は「回り回ってもとに戻る」という意味です。
