「死ぬ」を英語で言ってみたい。

YouTuberとしても有名なJohn Greenの“The Fault in Our Stars.”からの引用です。

“There are a number of ways to establish someone’s approximate survival expectations without actually asking. I used the classic: “So, are you in school?” Generally, your parents pull you out of school at some point if they expect you to bite it.”

「実際に聞かないで他人のおおよその余命を確認するにはいくつか方法がある。古典的なやつを使った。『それで、学校には行ってるの？』普通は死ぬとわかっている時点で親は子供を学校に通わせなくなる」

'bite it' = 「死ぬ」

"bite it"はurbandictionaryで以下のように説明されています。

'to die; to become bernie; to kick the bucket; to buy the farm. Short for bite the dust'

もともとは'bite the dust'で、そのフレーズが短縮されて'bite it'になったとされています。'bite the dust'の由来はEnnglishstackexchangeで次のように説明されています。

"... Picture someonen fallingn down, wouldned or dead, quite literally biting the dust (soil, ground, earth)..."

「誰かが傷つき又は死んで倒れ、まさに文字通り砂埃（土、地面、大地）を噛んでるのを想像してみなさい。」

"bite"自体は「噛む」という意味です。

'bite the dust'「死んだ人が倒れて地面を噛んでいる様子」を表します。

このフレーズが短縮された'bite it"が「死ぬ」という意味を持つようになったようです。
