石臼、挽臼を意味するラテン語が語源です。

「臼で穀物などをひく」ようにいろいろなものがごちゃまぜになる様子から、「無秩序な状態で動き回る」という冒頭の動詞の意味を持つようになったのではないかと個人的に推測します。
