モール君の秘密日記シリーズを読み直してハマりました。"Holes"や"Harry Potter"と似たような中毒性があります。１３歳の少年の日記という設定なので読みやすいです。

主人公のモールは彼女のパンドラとの関係がいいところまで行きながら最後までず悶々とした日々を過ごしています。そこで彼は親戚のおばさんに相談の手紙を書きます。返事の手紙で上記のフレーズが登場します。
"lather meaning"とググると"lahter"の意味は以下のように説明されています。
1.a frothy white mass of bubbles produced by soap, washing powder, etc. when mixed with water.
「石鹸や洗剤などが水と混ぜられて時にできる白い泡」
2.a state of agitation or nervous excitement.
「動揺または興奮して落ち着かない状態」
”be in a lather”の場合は２番めの意味で使われています。
Dictionary.comでは以下のように説明されています。
”in a lather. Also, in a state . Agitated and anxious, as in Don't get yourself in a lather over this , or She was in a state over the flight cancellation . The first term alludes to the frothy sweat of a horse, the second to an upset state of mind.”
